Uneven brackets are a bit like black coffee: you have to let the taste for it evolve and grow on you.

Earlier in my career I would prefer to use the even style, but then I switched over to the K&R style, as it is formally called, after I realized a single, vitally important benefit of doing so: I save on the number of lines of code. Think about it, I have to scroll up and down within my code far less when I use this style. This benefit itself was what clicked the deal for me.
